satori sharing circle

We are story-tellers. Since the dawn of civilizations people gathered around the fire to dance, share meals and stories, experiences and rich healing traditions. Those stories are the currency of human growth. Jean Houston writes “Storytelling is the oldest form of teaching and the basic vehicle for the transmission of culture from one generation to the next.”

Satori tribe is no exception. Every week we come together to reconnect with our authentic selves, and also to get grounded in the community of kindred spirits. We share our challenges and triumphs, we cry, we laugh, we hug. Here are some of our stories:

Sarah and I have been working together for a while – sometimes in a group setting and often one on one unwinding old holding and movement patterns. Back in December she posted this on my Facebook Wall:

Julia! It’s a momentous occasion! I just REALLY learned how to be moved by/move with my breath. It took me about 15 minutes to move my head about 1/2 way to my shoulder. I’m amazed and so thankful for your help in getting me here!!!! Life is UNBELIEVABLE! :)

And then continued a day later:

 Hey Julia,

As a continuation of my earlier post, I’m soooOOOOooo thankful for the emphasis you put on alignment and self-awareness when you’re facilitating a class. It’s expanded my mind way beyond what any sequence of poses could do on their own, and I’m loving my body (and life!) more and more every time I practice.

When I first came to your classes I was anxious about the slow pace and missed doing the challenging poses I’d gotten used to from power yoga. Whereas in those classes I could easily measure progress (I counted chaturangas like trophies), in your classes the benefits were a lot less tangible. It’s interesting to see how much my feelings have changed since then.

The more I learn to actually feel what my body wants instead of over-analyzing, exercising blind discipline, and listening to someone else tell me what to do, I’m inclined to practice less and explore more. It’s incredibly empowering. By actively listening and slowing down, I can finally be happy in my own skin and enjoy the present for all that it holds (regardless of how many chaturangas I can do)!

:)I know I have so much to learn still, but I feel today was a milestone. I never thought I’d say that about breathing fully and moving my head 1/2 way to my shoulder! The realization that so much knowledge can be contained in such a simple, small movement suggests that this process never ends. What fascinating things we are!
Thank you, Julia, for being so compassionate to all of us throughout this crazy yoga-inspired journey. I’m ridiculously happy to know you.
Love,
Sarah
And some more sharings:

“  Since starting private lessons with you, I feel I’m finally learning what Feldenkrais practitioners mean when they talk about “awareness through movement”. Exciting stuff!”

“I am rebuilding my body! We should turn that into a Satori Yoga T-Shirt! :)

Last night at yoga I accomplished what I thought was the impossible and woke this morning with no side effects. I can’t wipe the grin off my face. It’s amazing what you can do with positive energy and the right mindset. Thanks Julia”

“Julia,

We are looking for someone to accept us, listen and care for who we are – don’t we – you provide that for many people.”
