perfect sleep

In his show Dr. Amen, the author of “Change your brain, change your body”, asks his audience: “ Have you ever received a chest pain diagnosis?”…

A few years ago I developed this peculiar and rather frightening condition – extreme chest pain, wheezing and difficulty breathing, a pulse rate of about 220 and an irregular heartbeat. I could barely walk! My doctors were puzzled, and I was completely terrified…

Dr. Amen explains: “Chest pain is a symptom might be of a heart attack, indigestion; of bad cold or lung congestion; stab wound to the chest”, or as it was in my case – inflammation of the rib cartilage and muscle tissue.

Just like chest pain, insomnia is a symptom.  A symptom of imbalance; a symptom of something that is not quite right; a symptom of unmet needs or unresolved emotions.

“ At some level – whether it’s physical, mental or emotional – we haven’t finished extracting what is helpful to us and eliminating what is indigestible. On the physical level, indigestion is caused by bad food or by weak digestion and leads to conditions like heartburn, a contributor to insomnia. Mental indigestion is the inability to let go of a certain incident or thought – usually an unpleasant experience. Emotional indigestion is the reoccurrence of a feeling, often sadness or anger, long after the precipitating event. The emotion has not been sufficiently digested and remains just under the surface, springing up for no apparent reason – and keeping us awake at night” writes Carrie Demers, MD and Ayurvedic practitioner.

Ayurveda, the holistic medical practice of India, and a sister science to yoga, recognizes the imbalance in Vata and Pitta doshas  as the lead cause of emotional and mental indigestion, and a principal source of insomnia.
